When I was a kid, my parents didn't much care for my musical tastes. This was the case with most of my generation I think. Parents who grew up with Sinatra or Porter Wagoner didn't much care for Black Sabbath or Kiss. The crazy sounds Hendrix was coaxing out of his guitar didn't jive with the Elvis or Benny Goodman crowd. I think it is pretty cool to see parents and kids sharing more of their music today. It isn't unusual to see a 12 year old come in for lessons to learn some Led Zepplin, nor is it odd to see a parent going to see Avenge Sevenfold with his kid and enjoying it.
I also see so many students reaching outside of the expected demographic and getting into different styles than their peers. If you judge music by what is offered by the mainstream sources you'd swear it was dying a painful death. But here in the store, it is alive, very alive and very varied. All ages, all styles spoken here. Despite what record executives might want, people are picking what moves them and that, my friends speaks well of the health and power of music.
